Ten Things You Might Not Know About Fright Night Ten Things You Might Not Know About Fright Night Growing up as an eighties horror fan, Fright Night is always at the top of my list of films to see when I’m itching for a taste of good eighties horror FX. For the last thirty five years, this film has stood the test of time and is still as enjoyable today as it was the first time you saw the film. Here are ten things you might not know about Fright Night. Tom Holland (not the one who plays Spider-Man but the O.G. horror writer/director) wrote the screenplay in three weeks and Fright Night was his first directorial job. Based on the success of Psycho 2 (which he wrote as well), Holland was given the reigns to direct Fright Night. Jerry, played by Chris Sarandon, eats fruit throughout the film because according to Sarandon (his idea) Jerry had a lot of fruit bat in his DNA. Peter Vincent was named after Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. Tom Holland originally wanted Vincent Price to play Peter Vincent, but Vincent Price was unfortunately too ill at the time to commit. The role went to Roddy McDowall. A good part of the film’s budget was spent on special effects. It was the first a vampire film spent over $1 million on FX. Charlie Sheen wanted to audition for the role of Charlie Brewster, but Tom Holland didn’t feel he was right for the part and didn’t even let him audition. Charley’s 1966 Ford Mustang actually belonged to director Tom Holland. Director Tom Holland asked the wardrobe person to rub ice on Heidi Sorenson’s nipples prior to shooting her scene. Jerry wears a trenchcoat to make it seem like he’s wearing a modern day vampire’s cape. For the final transformation of Evil Ed, Stephen Geoffreys endured 18 hours of makeup. The studio didn’t have big expectations for the film, but Fright Night became a critical success and was the second highest grossing horror film of 1985. A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2 took the crown that year. For more like this, please visit @thehorrorauthor

Ten Things You Might Not Know About The Lost Boys Ten Things You Might Not Know About The Lost Boys The Lost Boys is the epitome of cool vampire films and hands down one of my favorite vampire films of all time. The movie has a huge following attached to it, so here are ten things you might not know about The Lost Boys. The original script centered around a group of “Goonie-type 5th-6th grade kid vampires” but director Joel Schumacher hated the idea and changed the vampires to teenagers to make the film sexier. Joss Whedon was a huge fan of The Lost Boys and it became his inspiration for Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The Frog brothers were named Edgar and Alan, after Edgar Allan Poe of course. Corey Haim revealed in 2007 that all the fake blood used in the filmed contained glitter to give it a shimmering effect on film. The town of Santa Clara doesn’t exist, but all the landmarks in the film can be found in Santa Cruz, California. Ben Stiller and Jim Carrey were once considered to play members of The Lost Boys. The title of the film comes from Peter Pan since the Lost Boys in the novel can never grow up. The song Cry Little Sister was written by Gerard McMann for the film and became a massive hit (we’re listening to it on loop while writing this post). Over the decades it has been covered by at least twenty different artists, ranging from Eminem to Marilyn Manson. In the dinner scene with Max and the Frog brothers, Alan (Jamison Newlander) puts out candles with his fingers. Nobody told Jamison that he had to wet his fingers first, so he ended up burning his fingers. Characters in the movie say the name “Michael” about 120 times. Ten Things You Might Not Know About Scanners That Ten Things You Might Not Know About Scanners That head explosion scene, it was originally supposed to happen at the beginning of the film, but Cronenberg didn’t want audiences who were late to miss it, so he moved it to later in the film. Director David Cronenberg had to write the script and shoot the film at the same time. He called the experience the most frustrating film he ever worked on because production was rushed to qualify for the tax write off. For the fire scene, Michael Ironside wore a fake pair of eyes worn by Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man. The head explosion scene was created by filling a latex head full of dog food, leftovers, rabbit livers, fake blood, and then shooting it with a shotgun. Star Jennifer O’Neill first appears thirty seven minutes into the film. Stephen Lack kept the head that exploded. Michael Ironside was originally hired for a very small part and was paid $5300 Canadian dollars. Robert A. Silverman, who played Scanner Benjamin Pierce, has collaborated many times with Director David Cronenberg. They have worked together on Scanners, Rabid, The Brood, Naked Lunch, and eXistenZ. The 1959 novel Naked Lunch has a chapter called Senders, which describes a hostile organization of telepaths bent on world domination. It was clearly an inspiration for Scanners and David Cronenberg directed a film adaptation of Naked Lunch in 1991. In 2008 Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2) was supposed to direct a remake of Scanners but would only do it with the blessing from David Cronenberg. Cronenberg never gave his okay for the remake and the remake was then dead in the water. For more awesome horror stuff please check out the link in our bio (@thehorroauthor)

We Might Be Getting A Frankenstein And Dracula Reb We Might Be Getting A Frankenstein And Dracula Reboot From Blumhouse Take this news with a grain of salt since nothing is official at the moment, but after Blumhouse scored a massive critical and box office hit with The Invisible Man, we may be getting more Universal Picture monster flicks. Jason Blum recently said in an interview: “I’d love to do Frankenstein. I’ve tasked our filmmakers with trying to figure out just straight FRANKENSTEIN. Again, I don’t know if someone else is doing it, I don’t know anything about it, but I would love to try and I’m waiting for the great idea.” Also, over the weekend, Leigh Whannell signed a new first picture deal with Blumhouse and he mentioned in an interview for The Invisible Man: “I think I would try to get at the essence of what makes Dracula scary, which is, to me, what makes Dracula scary is his lack of mercy. The fact that he might pretend… Like, he’s not a romantic. He needs to drink blood. What parallels in life can you think of that equate to someone without mercy. It’s a psychopath, right? A psychopath… So to have this conversation with you, I’m spitballing here, I would take the character right back to that and be like, I’m going to make the psychopath version of this. The person who just doesn’t give a fuck. Maybe he drinks blood but beyond that, there’s no capes, there’s no lightning, there’s no fog, no wolves. It’s just a psychopath who drinks blood.” Again, take this news with a grain of salt since it was only mentioned in interviews and nothing is confirmed at the moment. Fingers crossed we do get a reboot of all the Universal monster flicks in the future. #dracula #frankenstein #universalmonsters #jasonblum #leighwhannell #blumhouse

Horror Legend David Cronenberg Announced For Texas Horror Legend David Cronenberg Announced For Texas Frightmare Weekend2020 - Texas Frightmare announced today that the one and only David Cronenberg will be appearing at this year's convention. Cronenberg will join other guests of honor like Clive Barker and Alice Cooper. David Cronenberg will appear for all three days at the convention, from May 1 - May 3. Here is the official press release: Press Release:Dallas, TX, March 2, 2020: Texas Frightmare Weekend Presented by Arrow Video is pleased to announce iconic director David Cronenberg. Cronenberg will appear all three days at the upcoming convention and film festival on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2020. In the annals of dark fantasy filmdom, perhaps no other artist has made more of an impact than Canadian director David Cronenberg. From his early Cinepix shockers SHIVERS (THEY CAME FROM WITHIN) and RABID to his landmark psychological body horrors THE BROOD and VIDEODROME, to his epic, slime-soaked tragedy THE FLY, Cronenberg's cerebral, controversial, often stomach-churning mind-benders made him an international sensation with critics, fellow filmmakers and audiences alike. But while many of his colleagues and peers ended up retreading and repeating their past success, Cronenberg refused, instead opting to evolve the very idea of what a horror movie could be, with progressive films like DEAD RINGERS, CRASH, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and the unjustly overlooked M. BUTTERFLY. As an actor, Cronenberg has made appearances in everything from John Landis' INTO THE NIGHT to Gus Van Sant's TO DIE FOR to his latest role in the neo-noir DISAPPEARANCE AT CLIFTON HILL. But he is of course perhaps best known and loved for his mesmerizing turn as the serial killer psychiatrist Dr. Decker in Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED.
